Stop Shaken Baby Syndrome Inc.

The good news is that SBS is preventable through education! A recent study in New York state found that in areas surrounding hospitals with SBS education programs implemented for new parents, instances of SBS were reduced by 47%.  Since parents are the offenders 50% of the time, it only stands to reason that prevention programs are very effective!  Here are a few ways you can help in the fight against SBS:

Every cent of what you donate will be used to purchase educational materials for furthering the SBS prevention cause, as well as going toward hosting events for SBS awareness in the community. Thanks so much in advance. Your funds will be used to save children’s lives!

Contribute Funds

A very important piece of legislation has been introduced in Congress this year—the National Shaken Baby Prevention Act of 2007. If passed, the act would create a national education and awareness program for new parents, caregivers and the general public to alert everyone of the dangers of shaking a baby. Contact your Congressman today and urge him (or her) to co-sponsor the bill!

Contact your Congressmen

· Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper describing the dangers of SBS and urging people to be aware.

· Find out if there are hospital education programs in place in your area; if not, contact an established organization who can help you start one (and please feel free to contact us!)

· Offer to help out new parents by giving them some much-needed downtime. If anyone ever calls you frustrated with a crying baby, go right over and let them take a break.

· Contact your local Department of Social Services, Health Departments, and pediatricians’ offices to make sure that they have brochures on hand for SBS awareness.  If not, offer to provide some. The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome has very inexpensive, informative SBS brochures available.

Volunteer your time

Don’t let SBS awareness end with you!  Be sure to tell everyone who cares for your child, including your spouse, how important it is to never shake a baby.  Anytime someone you know has a new baby, discuss the dangers of SBS with them in a non-confrontational way. It may be uncomfortable at first, but the price of a child’s life is well worth it.
